Feliz Navidad!

By | December 29, 2010

Thanks to the money raised from the sale of Wapa-Wapa jewellery, Mashi was able to give a little extra to the children this Christmas.

The children of Loma Grande were given a little Christmas party, not only the those who attend Las Luctias nursery, but the older children who go to school there too.  On Tuesday 22nd December, 50 children took part in fun and games to celebrate Christmas.  There was food and drinks plus a bag of sweets as a present for each child.  Some parents also came along to enjoy the party.  This was an opportunity for all members of the community to gather together and have some fun.  They played games, ate food and had a nice time.  Thank you to those who have supported Wapa by purchasing jewellery.  It means we have been able to spread a bit of Christmas cheer this year.  Happy New Year to you all.

Gary Lightbody becomes a supporter of the Mashi Foundation

By | December 5, 2010

We are very happy to have recently gained support from Gary Lightbody, frontman of Snow Patrol.  We are building our network of people who are committed to the work we do with children living in poverty.  Gary is positive about the ethos of the charity and the programme areas we provide.
It is vital to increase the number of sponsor parents and donors in order to build on our success and to reach so many more children.  We are very grateful to those who are involved with the charity and enable us to make such a positive impact for these children.

Magoo headline charity gig

By | October 23, 2010

The fantastic MAGOO will be headlining a gig in aid of the Mashi Foundation.
A long time ago ( about 1992 ) in a village far far away, a band called MAGOO was formed. Influenced by bands such as guided by voices, stereolab, pavement, the flaming lips and a healthy dollop of radio peel, the band took its first steps towards being able to play. This achieved they set about writing, recording and playing local gigs in and around Norwich after releasing three singles on noisebox records they were snapped up by those canny scots chemikal underground, where they released two albums : “the soateramic sounds of magoo” and “vote the pacifist ticket today”, during this time Magoo played all over Britain, did some european jaunts, played CMJ festival in New York and at Glastonbury festival. After parting ways with the chemikals, the band started recording their third album “realist week” at their own sickroom studios, eventually releasing it on london label global warming to great reviews

Runners raise money for Mashi

By | October 18, 2010

Sarah and Andrew took part in the Great Eastern Run on Sunday 10th October to raise money for the Mashi Foundation.

The half marathon took place in Peterborough, starting at 10.10am on the 10th of October.  Over 4000 people took part in the day, raising money for many different charities and causes.  It was a great atmosphere and a real celebration of all of the good work that charities are involved in.

Sarah and Andrew raised nearly £400 for Mashi, which will be used to fund school places and health care provision for children in Quito and Loma Grande.

Thank you to all those who were involved and made donations.  There is still time to donate, please just click on this link:

Five children start school this academic year thanks to our sponsors.

By | September 24, 2010

With the help of more sponsor parents we have been able to support 5 children to start school this year.  This is an exciting time for them particularly those who haven’t yet been to school.

Schooling in Ecuador is free but there are costs involved which mean that many parents are just unable to send their children.  Parents are expected to pay for registration, uniforms, books, pens/pencils, exams and the total cost can be about $200 per child per year.  This is just not possible for many families who are living in poverty and particularly if there is more than one child in the family.

We are grateful to those people who have become sponsors to these children.  With their monthly support, we have been able to cover all these costs and ensure the children can attend school.  We hope this support and committment will allow these children to gain an education which is absolutely essential if they are to have any opportunity to change their lifestyle.

Emily is particularly grateful to her sponsors – she has never been to school and has been desperate to for a while now.  When she heard she would be starting this year, she was ecstactic!   She is very much looking forward to learning to read and write.

Donations arrive in Ecuador

The boxes have arrived!

the boxes arrive at Loma Grande

All of the donations that friends and family have so kindly made arrived in Quito last week.  They have now been picked up by the fireman of Patate and taken back to the village.

J2 visited Loma Grande to give out the donations to the families there.  He sent an email to say how pleased and grateful everyone was and how touched they were to know that people on the other side of the world have taken the time to do this for them.  It was an emotional day and one that won’t be forgotten.  Thank you to everyone who made donations.  I hope you can see some of the things you donated in the photos.

The opening of “Las Lucitas del futuro”

By | July 16, 2010

We have some fantastic news,  the nursery in Loma Grande has now opened!

“Las Lucitas del Futuro” nursery opened on Monday 12th July 2010 and is now providing care for up to 21 children aged from birth to 6 years of age.  We are able to employ 3 women from the community to work in the nursery, 2 caring for the children and one cook.   The children come to the nursery at 7.00am and are then picked up by their parents at 4.00pm.  This provision allows the parents to go to work in the fields in the knowledge their children are safe and looked after.

In addition, we are able to access some support for the workers of the nursery, they are committed to developing their personal and professional skills by attending training sessions from external providers.  This also is a fantastic opportunity for them to grow and develop.

We really hope this nursery goes from strength to strength.  It will offer a safe environment for the children to learn, develop and grow in all aspects of their lives.  Thank you to all those in Loma Grande who showed a committment to this project and to their own community. A particular thanks to J2 and Mirian who have helped make this possible.
