Healthcare in Down Town Quito
Current project:
As I mentioned previously I have been working with a doctor here in Quito, Marielena Carrera. She is an amazing person as well as a medic who is absolutely committed to working with and for the people of her country. She is working in the Historic Centre of Quito, which is an area of poverty, with high levels of social exclusion and a migratory population. She offers health care to a variety of patients.
One of her cases, a young boy Josue, who is two and a half, lives with his grandmother. He has been unwell for a number of months with an ear infection, plus chronic malnutrition, micronutrient deficiency and has suffered neglect. He has never been treated correctly and due to financial difficulties medicine has never been bought for him. Recently, with Marielena’s intervention, he has received the care he has needed and his grandmother has been encouraged to give him the attention that he needs. Josue is unable to live with his parents as they have abandoned him as a result of their own difficulties with drugs and alcohol. Josue has had many health problems since birth and has some developmental delays. The Mashi Foundation has become involved and is looking to support Josue and his grandmother. We have been able to buy him some vitamins and supplements to help him to develop and would like this to be ongoing support, given the financial difficulties his grandmother faces.
With money that has kindly been donated by people in the UK, we were able to buy what he needed, but this is a short term intervention. For Josue, his needs will be longer term and so we want to be able to offer support on a regular basis.

We are looking for sponsor parents who could commit to a small amount of money each month that would mean that Josue would get his physical needs met, in terms of nutrition, medication and vitamins. Please make contact either by email (info@mashifoundation.org) or by telephone (07518603526 add 00 44 if you are outside of the UK) and you can receive some more details about how to help. Thank you.
